Because there are no standard for the use of hand signals when teaching your pet dog training tricks, you are to creatively create unique hand signals for your dog during obedience training.

When you first start training your dog to sit or do any other dog training tricks with the use of your hands, the first thing you should remember to do is to place your arm at your side and then move your hand towards the chest with your palms facing downward.  The palm of your hand should be facing the dog.

The next thing you have to accomplish is to train your dog to remain in command. To accomplish that using hand signals, you have to place your arms straight towards the dog with your palm lengthened forward. You’ll then have to say the command “stay” as you gradually extend your arm but keep your hands perpendicular with your right palm near your pet’s nozzle avoiding any contact.

If your pet tries to snuffle your hand, stop him at once but remember to do it in a very gentle fashion.

Another hand signal command you can use when teaching your friend dog training tricks is the one for “lie down”. The common hand signal for this is to give the command “down” and simultaneously taking your hand with palms facing down pointing to the floor. You might also need to teach your pet what the command “down” means through showing him. There are also instances wherein your dog won’t want to lie down and there really is no use trying to force him, sometimes your dog might not understand what you are requesting him to do.

A great way to motivate your dog while teaching him the dog training tricks and the hand signals is to give him a treat or praise every time he does something correctly. The dog would become more familiar with the gestures and commands that way.

Using verbal commands as well as hand gestures when teaching your dog training tricks would also help speed up the learning process. Consistency is also key, your pet has to get used to the verbal and gestures to be able to associate them with certain commands. This would also help them learn it faster.
